What To Wear?
Studio Sessions
If you're doing parent/family poses with your newborn session, aim for lightweight neutrals that will allow your baby to be the focus of your pictures. Most families opt for coordinating shades of cream, beige, or white because they are timeless and work well with most color schemes. Remember, you do not need to match...just coordinate! If you prefer a darker backdrop, black can also be a timeless/flattering color.
For Dad: A polo shirt or dress shirt with a lightweight sweater are great options. Avoid patterns, bright colors, or heavy knits.
For Mom: Loose fitting blouses tend to be the most comfortable, flattering, and photogenic. Don't worry about them fitting perfectly or too loose if you're wearing a maternity shirt...we can clamp them in the back and very little will show since you'll be holding the baby. You can also wear an off the shoulder gown from my maternity collection.
For Siblings: For girls I recommend a neutral colored dress or jumper. I have several studio pieces available upon request for sizes 12m to 5T. For boys, I recommend jeans or khakis with a plain white t-shirt, dress shirt, or shirtless. Avoid too many bulky layers (such as sweaters or vests), as they don't photograph well, especially in lying down poses. I recommend a snugger fit as opposed to loose.
For Skin to Skin: Another option is the 'skin to skin' look. For this option, mom should wear a simple thin strapped tank top and Dad should be in a white undershirt or completely shirtless. This is a beautiful option that really highlights the connection between everyone in the picture as your focus is on emotion rather than the wardrobe.
Outdoor Sessions
If choosing an outdoor session for your maternity, family, or milestone session, it's best to take into consideration the season/time of year when planning outfits. Not only for the type of clothing, but for colors and style as well!
Jewel tones are best suited for Fall/Winter, while pastels are great in the Spring/Summer! But keep in mind the timelessness of your portraits and stay away from colors you and your family don't usually wear. You also want to make sure you and your family are dressed comfortably for the weather (we all know how unforgiving Winter is here in Utah!), while avoiding overly bulky outerwear.
